YDF 2018 - first speakers confirmed
The first confirmed speakers for Young Driver Focus 2018 are a pair of academics who will deliver a joint presentation looking at how driver attitudes change once they’ve passed the driving test.
Young Driver Focus 2018 is once again being staged at the Royal Automobile Club in Pall Mall, London, on Wednesday 25 April 2018. The conference is jointly organised by FirstCar, Road Safety GB and the RAC Foundation, in association with the young driver insurer ingenie, who has been the event’s headline sponsor for the past four years.
Richard Rowe is professor of psychology at the University of Sheffield.
Richard’s research interests focus on the development of antisocial and risky behaviour from childhood to adulthood. He has applied this work to the development of dangerous driving behaviours in new licence holders in a number of projects with funding from the Economic and Social Research Council and the Medical Research Council, among other sources.
Dr Damian Poulter is a reader in psychology at the University of Greenwich.
Damien’s core research interest is in the psychological and behavioural factors associated with safety in traffic environments. In recent years his research has focussed primarily on better understanding the elevated crash risk of young and novice drivers, supported by funding from Research Councils UK.
Professor Rowe and Dr Poulter will present findings from a recent study investigating the behavioural factors underlying the improvement in road safety for new drivers over the first months of their driving careers, and how their attitudes and behaviour change over time after passing the driving test.
This presentation will form part of a session titled ‘What’s new?’, which will comprise a round-up of the latest thinking, insights and research into young driver behaviour.
The conference programme will also include a session looking at how the new driving test is bedding in six months after its introduction (in December 2017); and a session titled ‘Practitioners in action’ in which road safety practitioners will outline current interventions/campaigns/initiatives they are deploying in their local areas.
The cost of attending Young Driver Focus 2018 is £150 for Road Safety GB & Academy members; £175 plus VAT for other attendees from the private sector, the third sector, academia and ADIs; and £195 for all other attendees (all plus VAT). The delegate fee includes lunch and all other refreshments.
