Open day to drive home road safety to young people

Tuesday 17th October 2017

Young road users in Kent are being encouraged to visit a purpose built road safety centre to learn about the importance of staying safe at the wheel.

The Road Safety Experience, described as the ‘first purpose-built, interactive centre of its kind in the UK’, will host an open day on 24 October.

The centre, located in Rochester, was developed by Kent Fire & Rescue Service (KFRS)  and uses a combination of ‘powerful’ stories, interactive experiences and presentations from road safety experts.

Launched in June 2016, the centre is designed to encourage young people to look at the potential consequences of a road crash from all perspectives – for themselves, their passengers, other drivers and their families.

Aimed at those aged 16 years and over, the open day will provide visitors with the chance to test their skills as a crash scene investigator, learn what to do if they are first on the scene of a crash and watch a live rescue demonstration.

Mark Rist, KFRS, said: “A visit to the centre will hopefully make people stop, take notice and think seriously not only about how they drive but also how they behave as passengers.

“Lots of people see crashes on the road and assume it won’t ever happen to them. Sadly, decisions taken while driving can have a life-long impact and shatter lives.

“A visit to the Road Safety Experience will certainly get people thinking and talking. Hopefully it will change their behaviour behind the wheel.”

Two sessions will take place as part of the open day - one running from 10am-12.30pm, the other from 1.30-4pm. Click here to book.
