Pundits and penalties at the Driving School of Sport
A panel of Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSOs) subject the school run to a post match analysis in a new video designed to drive home the message that travel to school is not a game.
In the video, produced by South Lanarkshire Council to mark 2015 UN Global Road Safety Week* (4-10 May), the JRSOs feature as presenters commentating on and criticising driver behaviour, in a mock TV sport show.
Drawing parallels between bad behaviour on the football field and at the school gate is the starting point for the film, which then stretches the sporting analogies to preposterous lengths as the JRSOs examine car pools, park and stride and more.
Pupils from Townhill Primary in Hamilton, Newfield Primary in Stonehouse and St Leonard’s Primary in East Kilbride took part in making the film.
Eleanor Gibson, South Lanarkshire’s road safety training officer, said: “We are always looking for fresh ideas to help get our message across and while this video does take a sideways look at the issues, and mixes in a good deal of humour, it does not go soft on the important points.”
*2015 UN Global Road Safety Week
Working in partnership with other UK stakeholders, Road Safety GB produced a series of resources in support of UN Global Road Safety Week, including:
• A suite of road safety resources for children - including activity sheets, maps and country profilers – which are available free to download.
• A series of simple ‘how to’ guides to help educators and others teach basic road safety to children.
• A database of road safety professionals with expertise with regard to child road safety, who are willing to provide advice and support to people in other parts of the world.
• Four online discussion forums – on children and cycling, the Junior Road Safety Officer scheme, child car seats and chldren as pedestrians – which are available to view online.
