Fringe programme taking shape

Monday 14th July 2014

The fringe programme at the National Road Safety Conference in Brighton later this year will include presentations looking at young driver interventions and improving cyclists’ safety.

The fringe is a new development being introduced at the national conference in Brighton in November 2014. The fringe will run alongside the main programme and delegates will be free to choose which presentations they wish to attend from each.

Lauren Weston, a final year Psychology PhD student at the University of Plymouth, will deliver a presentation looking at the efficacy of young driver interventions.

Lauren’s research concerns the over-representation of young drivers in road traffic collisions, and examining the age-related factors associated with young drivers’ heightened risk.

She has investigated the role of reward and punishment on young males’ risk-taking behaviour, the relationship between different forms of peer pressure and risky driving, and the influence of message framing on the efficacy ratings of safe-driving messages.

Lauren will review the evidence concerning the efficacy of young driver interventions, and describe the results from one recent evaluation. The implications of these findings for the design and delivery of future interventions targeting young road users will be discussed, as will the broader lessons for evaluation studies.

In another presentation, Keith Baldock will explain how Brighton & Hove Council’s road safety team has deployed and developed the Met Police's "Exchanging Places" cyclist/HGV/PCV action day.

As levels of cycling increased in Brighton, so did the number of cycling casualties – with data indicating that drivers turning left at junctions across a cyclist's path was a significant problem.

Keith will explain how Brighton’s road safety team has used Exchanging Places to work with local bus and HGV companies to encourage cyclists to sit in the cab of an HGV vehicle.
