Success at Silverstone

Friday 23rd May 2014

Around 3,500 people attended a road safety event held at the Silverstone Circuit on Sunday 18 May.

The event was organised by the Northamptonshire Safer Roads Alliance which comprises Northamptonshire Highways, Northamptonshire Police and Northamptonshire Fire & Rescue.

One of the main aims was to raise awareness of road safety issues to “help make Northamptonshire’s roads the safest in the country”.

Highlights included the chance to ride around the Silverstone circuit in a police car, re-enactments of car crash rescues by the fire service, and the chance for young people to drive cars and ride mopeds on part of Silverstone’s Stowe circuit.

As well as the driving displays, many members of the public attended talks on road safety issues and received safety advice from a variety of experts.

John Spencer, road safety manager for Northamptonshire Highways, said: “Every member of the public is a road user and there was something for everybody at our event.

“We had no idea how interested or engaged the public would be but to have such a massive captive audience at this iconic venue made all our efforts worthwhile.”

Inspector Jen Helm who led the organisation of the event, said: “It went fantastically well. It made people a lot more interested in road safety issues and aware of the things they can do to improve their skills when they’re driving and riding.

“And it was a really fun day for the children. Everybody has been really pleased by how it’s gone.”

Chief constable Adrian Lee added: “Road safety is the responsibility of many different partners, who came together to provide this opportunity for the people of the county.

“We recognise the support we received from Silverstone and look forward to having a similar event next year.”
