Partnership provides training incentive for young drivers

Wednesday 16th April 2014

A motor vehicle student has been presented with a cheque for £500 to mark the launch of a reward scheme to encourage more young drivers to take part in Durham County Council’s young driver programme.

The programme, EXCELerate, includes three hours of practical in car-coaching and young people who complete it will be entered into an annual prize draw.

EXCELerate has been developed and is co-ordinated by Durham County Council’s road safety team on behalf of the County Durham and Darlington Casualty Reduction Partnership, and is delivered using funding from the National Driver Offender Retraining Scheme.

Ros Pluck, vice chair of the County Durham and Darlington Casualty Reduction Partnership, said: “It is difficult to persuade newly qualified drivers that there is more to driving than simply passing the driving test.

“By introducing this prize we hope that more young drivers will be encouraged to take part in the EXCELerate practical driver coaching session.

“The most common types of collisions young drivers and their passengers are involved in are overtaking, leaving the road and rear end collisions. This three hour session seeks to develop strategies which help the younger driver to cope with the situations leading to these types of collisions.”

The £500 prize was presented to Daniel Mitchell who attends New College in Durham.

Tony Flory, Durham County Council’s driver training services officer, said: “Since completing the course Daniel has benefitted from a significant reduction in his insurance premium, as his insurance company recognises his improved driving style through the use of  black box technology in his car.”
