Cycling study scoops MAST 2014 Award
Safer Roads Yorkshire and Humber picked up the 2014 MAST Award at the MAST Conference on 11 March.
Safer Roads Yorkshire and Humber received the award for a comprehensive study of cycle collisions that is underpinning the region’s engagement strategy in the run up to the 2014 Tour de France Grand Depart, which takes place in Yorkshire in July.
The Yorkshire and Humber Cycle Report, which was produced in 2012 using data from MAST, presents a wealth of information about the region's casualty and collision data. The report is freely available for download for subscribers to the Road Safety Knowledge Centre.
The report looks at both cyclists and drivers involved in cycle collisions and includes socio-demographic profiling of the different groups to help direct road safety campaigns.
The report’s findings have influenced a number of the region’s road safety projects including a radio advertising campaign which asks drivers to give cyclists space and explains the primary and secondary positions cyclists may take up on the road.
Safer Roads Yorkshire and Humber is also currently developing a mobile phone app which will offer advice to cyclists riding the Tour de France route.
The award was presented to Anke Taylor, Ruth Gore and Trish Hirst by Louise Lloyd from TRL. The 2014 MAST Conference was held on 11 March at Dunchurch Park Hotel in Rugby.
MAST Online is a web based road safety data analysis tool. It provides stakeholders with national crash data for user-customised in-depth analysis, and also offers unique insights into people involved in crashes with the help of Mosaic Public Sector.
