Council launches Children’s Traffic Club

Monday 17th June 2013

Cheshire West and Chester Council launched ‘The Children’s Traffic Club’ for the borough’s preschool children during UN Global Road Safety Week (6-12 May).

‘The Children’s Traffic Club’, an established and award winning road safety programme for three to four year olds, is now being rolled out in West Cheshire. The programme is designed to help make learning how to stay safe on the roads ‘fun’ and ‘interactive’ for children.

The Club, now in its 20th year, is described as “the most researched, monitored and evaluated road safety educational material in the UK”. It has recently been through a two-year research process, complete re-brand and an entire content redevelopment into a new digital format to “take learning road safety using multi-media to a new level”.

Councillor Lynn Riley, executive member for community and environment, said: “Making sure that our children have the right understanding about how to be safe on our roads is at the heart of this programme and the Club concentrates on giving parents and carers the capability to do this at home.

“Concentrating on pre-school pupils really does ensure that they know the highway from a young age and to date more than 2.5 million children around the UK have become members and received the club materials directly into their home.”

Selected nursery schools across the borough will receive a free resource pack which includes interactive DVDs and activity books for teachers of nursery classes. Parents will also be given the opportunity to enrol their children in the online traffic club.
