GLOBAL ROAD SAFETY WEEK SPECIAL FEATURE: SAFER STEPS
UN Global Road Safety Week
Case study: Safer Steps
To celebrate the Second UN Global Road Safety Week (6-12 May), which is focusing on pedestrian safety, Road Safety GB will be showcasing some of the UK's established pedestrian safety schemes.
Safer Steps is a pedestrian training package for Key Stage 2 pupils, which is being used by a number of local authorities across the country. The current materials were developed in 2011 by Road Safety Analysis (RSA)* on behalf of the road safety team in Berkshire, and are based on earlier schemes.
Through a combination of workbook and DVD elements that parents can work through with their children, Safer Steps allows users to progress systematically through a range of road crossing scenarios. Starting with fundamentals, the materials progress to include more complex issues such as road junctions and signal controlled crossings.
The same characters feature in both the DVD and the book in oder to encourage children to enjoy working through the two elements together.
The workbook includes a record showing when the child has completed activities under adult supervision and there is a certificate that can be completed and awarded to the child for working through all the material.
Throughout the resource children are encouraged to reflect back to their adult helpers the things that they have learnt, in order to provide evidence that they have assimilated the information.
RSA is working with a number of local authorities during 2013 to conduct a formal evaluation of Safer Steps. The aim of the evaluation is to understand the degree to which parents and children are engaging with the material together, and the effect that this is having on pedestrian safety within the family. RSA is confident that the evaluation will back-up the strong anecdotal evidence that children and families are engaging well with the material.
The Safer Steps brand has been further developed across a range of associated relevant merchandise including hi-viz jackets, reflective gym bags and reflective key rings, and presentation materials and banners.
