Walk to School Week kicks off in Brighton
More than 15,000 children from primary schools in Brighton & Hove will take part in Walk to School Week 2011 (16 – 20 May).
According to the National Travel Survey – carried out as part of the annual school census – the number of primary aged children walking to school in Brighton & Hove has increased from 51% in 2006/2007 to 61% in 2009/2010. Nationally 50% of primary aged children walked to school in 2009/2010.
Pupils attending Downs Junior School will take part in a photo competition, capturing what they see when walking to and from school. They will also be awarding a ‘golden boot’ to the class that walks the most during the week.
Windlesham School will create a walking crocodile on their way to school, with between 70 and 100 children expected to take part every day of the week.
And on the Friday 20 May all staff and pupils from St Mary Magdalen Primary School are gearing up to walk to school.
