20mph limits to be introduced outside Rochdale schools
Proposals to introduce 20mph speed limits and zones outside all but two schools in Rochdale have been approved (Rochdale Online).
In October 2009 a decision was made at a council meeting to introduce a 20mph speed limit on all roads outside the 81 schools in the borough. But currently there are only 36 with 20mph speed zones, with another two due for completion, leaving 43 schools which are located either in residential areas or fronting classified roads.
On 21 March a report presented to councillors at a cabinet meeting recognised that it would be ‘impractical’ to introduce the reduced speed limits outside two of the schools; one on an un-made lane, and the other located just off a dual carriage way.
According to the Rochdale Online report, part time 20mph speed zones will be controlled with amber corner flashers controlled by a central computer.
Schools in residential areas will be subject to 20mph zones with traffic calming features such as flat top and round top speed humps. These zones will be restricted to an area outside the school entrances.
